Help Electric Umbrella grow our Education Programme

by raising £100,000

A learning disabled woman is holding a microphone to support a school child sing.

Now 10 years old, Electric Umbrella needs funds to continue our impact and extend our reach and impact into new geographic areas.

Over the past 10 years Electric Umbrella have been running music sessions across Hertfordshire to combat social isolation and create meaningful experiences for learning disabled people.

Since January 2022 our Crew, made up of our learning disabled adult members and professional musicians, have visited over 150 mainstream primary schools across the South East to impart our message that ‘There is No Such Thing as Normal’, reaching over 40,000 children.

The schools are equipped with the language and social literacy to carry on these hugely important conversations long after our visit in order to witness learning disabled people as leaders, harness inclusion and integration, celebrate difference, reduce prejudice and aspire everyone to be ‘a little more Electric Umbrella’.

This represents a huge step in supporting our mission to challenge the way people think about learning disabled people.

We now need your support to be able to continue this vital work!

How YOU can support our mission

We need to raise £100,000 to meet the demand from schools

and increase the impact of this vital programme to support the delivery

of equality, diversity and inclusion around disability in schools.

Please support Electric Umbrella with a donation to our Education Programme.

£20,000...

will fund our education programme for half a term - 8,000 primary school children across 32 schools, 400 SEND students in person across 6 schools, 2,000 SEND children online, 40 pre-school babies/children and their parents and 50 children in Early Years settings.

£10,000...

will enable us to develop our digital learning resource to equip teachers with the tools they need to promote disability confidence to the next generation of learners and influencers in society – potentially reaching every school and child all over the UK.

£5,000...

will produce our next album of music aimed at Early Years children with and without SEND, co-created by our learning disabled musicians. Your support will pay for the recording and production costs of our next album, which we aim to roll out as a free resource to Early Years provisions and use at home.

£2,500...

will pay for six full day visits (one each half term) to a mainstream primary school. This will enable us to develop good relationships with the all children teachers and staff across the while school, and work with the senior leadership team to build a truly inclusive vision for the school.

£1,000...

will pay for a full day of workshops in a secondary school. A full day of interactive workshops across an entire year group of up to 500 students to reduce discrimination against the learning disabled community and empower teenagers to make better language choices when talking about learning disabled people.

The impact YOU will make…

Leadership roles for learning disabled adults

Learning disabled school leavers are rarely asked what their actual future ambitions are and aren’t supported enough to be leaders.

Participating at the forefront of our Education programme combats this and provides genuine leadership roles and responsibilities for our members alongside the opportunity to work with children, that they simply don’t get elsewhere.

Addressing prejudice

Our Education Programme addresses the prejudice against learning disabled people from a young age. A survey from a recent visit to a secondary school showed that 3 in every 4 children answered yes when asked “would you consider some of the language you use in the future as a result of your experience with Electric Umbrella today”.

Opportunity and aspiration for learning disabled children

Our Music Machine visits to SEND schools provide engaging opportunities for learning disabled children to find expression, create friendships and beyond this realise there are opportunities for them to positively contribute to society when they leave school. Some of our members who lead the education programme only discovered the possibility through attending Music Machine when they were at school.
