Through interactive music workshops, our Pushing Boundaries Crew encourage students to celebrate difference, challenge perceptions of the learning disabled community, break down barriers and enable students to explore issues of communication, language use and prejudice in a creative and vibrant environment.

Electric Umbrella Pushing Boundaries at
Parmiter's and Tring Schools.

At Electric Umbrella, we want people to feel confident about their interactions with our members, together with the language they use. And that’s not always easy if you’re not familiar with the right sort of terminology.

Not only are these exciting and engaging days for students and teachers, but the positive impact on the school, and wider, community can be far reaching and long lasting.

Recent research has highlighted that Year 9 is a particularly important age group when it comes to EDI education, although we are happy to discuss working with different age groups as well.

We visit Secondary Schools and Colleges on Tuesdays throughout the academic year.

The power of what we do is undeniable

Majority of secondary students we work with haven't heard of us before we arrive, but we always make a positive lasting impression.

Hear what students had to say after experiencing an Electric Umbrella performance:

"I felt so happy to see people with disabilities being represented in such a good light where they can create amazing music for others to hear and enjoy."

"It has shown me that learning disabled people are the same as people without those conditions and they can do everything as well as people who are not learning disabled."

"Seeing people able to get up on stage and be themselves is something I couldn’t do. It takes so much courage to do that regardless of whether you have a disability or not, and it was amazing to watch."

"I saw how learning disabled people can do lots of great things, such as playing music in the amazing way they did, which is something I cannot do."

"It’s made me realise that just because they might look or act differently from other people, that doesn’t mean they are any less nice or talented than the rest of us. Seeing people able to get up on stage and be themselves is something I couldn’t do. It takes so much courage to do that regardless of whether you have a disability or not and it was amazing to watch."

"It has definitely changed my perception. Now I have seen disabled people being incredibly talented, I understand more that they are just as capable as able people. And they sounded incredible. Although I understood this before, now I’ve seen it firsthand which was amazing."

Our CEO, Mel Boda, said, “The impact our members can make from just one visit is incredible.

“We’re so pleased that, through visiting schools and providing such a positive interaction between the students and our learning disabled community, we can challenge the perceptions students have before they go off into the world and start meeting people beyond their own peer groups.

“These visits also provide our members with the opportunity to meet new people, express themselves on stage and learn new skills. We’re looking forward to visiting more schools soon.”
